2008 Westside CubsThe 2008 Edition Westside cubs will likely be our final year together as a team. In 2009, our boys will move on to Middle School and some of our better players may likely make the middle school team as 6th graders. Other players will move on to travel ball. 2008 also will be a difficult year because, as 2007 Whitfield County Champions, we can expect other communities to come prepared when they play us. However, as we learned in 2007, we must remember that the regular season really means nothing in terms of County Championships. The better we prepare our entire team for the end of the year tournament, the better our chances are in repeating as Whitfield County Champions.

We will continue to try to teach and work on basic skills for each position. We will try to make sure the boys have fun, learn good sportsmanship, and fair play and we will try to reward those players who develop their skills at a faster pace. Baseball is a game in which you develop skills through practice. Those boys who play baseball at home will develop their skills more quickly than those who spend more time honing their Playstation® skills. These boys that work hard at home and learn during practice will get more playing time during the regular season. As 11 year olds, the game will change substantially from what we remember as 10 year olds (2007). Pitchers will begin throwing more strikes. Hitters will begin to hit more often and harder and we must learn to field the ball and know where the play is to be made to get an out. Teams that hit and catch will begin to win more often and it will transition from a pitchers game to a hitters game. If you examine our new 2008 Cubs Stats page and look at 2006 and 2007 Team walk and strikeout ratio (at the bottom of batting stats), you will see that these numbers are beginning to drop each year. We should expect this trend to continue in 2008. Our pitchers may not seem as dominating as they have in the past. Simply throwing strikes won't get as many outs. Opposing batters will begin to hit this year. Our fielders will have to learn their job and back up other players on the field. Our batters cannot go up to the plate expecting to get a walk because the opposing pitchers will have improved as well. Hitting and fielding will win the County Championship this year. 2007 will be a tough act to follow, but if we use the regular season to prepare we can expect to compete with the very best teams in the county.
