2008 Early Bird Tournament

The Following is the schedule for the 2008 Early Bird Tournament.  All Games are at Edwards Park.  We would like all players to arrive at the ballpark no later than 7:00PM.  Players should plan to attend Wednesday night game between New Hope and Antioch, as well to watch the teams they will be playing.

The 2008 Early Bird was alot of fun and Saturday's games gave the boys (and parents) an opportunity to see what tournament (travel) ball is all about.  With the exception of getting to play the games back-to-back, (in tournament ball you may have to wait 3 hours between games), it provided a good feel for tournament format.

We had a number of pleasant surprises during the tournament and it proves no matter how much time you practice, games are still the best opportunity to polish the skills you teach.  It also showed that the boys that were at every practice were the ones that started to show significant improvement by the third game.

It was a pleasant surprise to see Drew Guffey's bat get started so early this year.  Usually, he goes 1 for 15 to start the year and 15 for 20 to finish the year.  Drew went 8 for 10 in the tournament.  Logan Hilton also was a big surprise when pitching.  He was completely unhittable.  Logan pitched 8 innings and struck out 20 batters (of 24 outs), gave up no hits, no runs, and allowed only three base runners on 3 walks during the entire tournament.  Learning to throw a circle change-up has been the difference for Logan.  Batters were completely off-balance by the change of speeds.

We were hesitant about putting Dakota Ware in at Catcher, especially in the Championship game, since he had never caught in a game before.  However, we were very encouraged with the job he did and, with work, he could become a regular catcher.  This would free up Paxton for an infield spot.

Paxton Bennett did a good job catching, but he did a great job at the plate.  He dropped down several excellent bunts.  Actually, they were perfect bunts.  This is an area the entire Cubs team needs to work on.  At this age, bunts are almost impossible to handle if they are put down properly.

Tucker Burns continue to surprise us.  If we could see him at every practice, he could make great strides by year-end.  He made a spectacular catch in centerfield in the championship game that stopped a rally by Antioch.  He also put down a good bunt, which is an area we need to work with him.  With his speed he can drop a bunt down any time he wants to get on base.  We need to work on his technique, but he understands the basics.

Trey Hasty played well all around.  He made several great catches at first and he came in to get the save as pitcher.  Trey has made so much improvement since last year, which was his first year in baseball.  We can't wait to see how he finishes the year.

Ryan Townsend showed us some sparkle of brilliance at second base and at the plate.  He also will be able to pitch for us this year once he is able to work some on accuracy at home.  Ryan simply needs to practice pitching and work on his wind-up.

Cody Ware and Chip Brown are both coming along nicely at the plate.  Both are swinging with authority and it is only a matter of time before both start striking the ball deep to the outfield.  Both Cody and Chip each got good hits on Saturday.

Jackson Bell, Garrett Kelly, Hunter Hewitt, and Robert Nichols were out-of-town on Saturday and missed a real fun day, and a wonderful experience.  Many of the other County teams that did not play in the Tournament could not play because the Tournament was scheduled at the beginning of Spring break.
