Cubs Vs Antioch Crusaders

Cubs 8 Antioch 4

(final Inning to be played)

Chuck, the Coach of the Antioch Team, has really made tremendous strides with the Antioch team over the last few years.  They have progressed from not very good to very good, fun competition, and they field the ball better than any team we have played over the last few years.

I was very proud of our Cubs in this game.  To be honest, the way they were warming up, our coaches were sure they would get shellacked to the wall.  If it had not been for our bats coming alive, we might have.

The Cubs bats came alive and several game balls will have to be retired.  A ball that is not round cannot be used and several players absolutely flattened the ball with base hits.  These weren't cheap between the infielders legs, through the outfielders legs, hits or Home Runs; some of these drives may have been out-of-the park on a regulation field.

Drew Guffey, Jackson Bell, Garrett Kelly, and Trey Hasty each blasted the ball to the outfield with back-to-back-to-back line drives.  Jackson, and then Trey, hit Home Run blasts heard in Murray County.  Paxton Bennett hit a line shot up the middle that (if it had not been slowed down by bouncing off the pitcher) would have rolled all the way to the 300 ft fence.  Even Chip Brown got in the action with a double to right field.

Cody Ware absolutely flattened a drive that he was way out in front of and dented a Lexus 345 ft from home plate in foul territory.  Cody went hitless, but he has the tools to be a smasher for us.  Hitting is about timing and timing is about practice.  Once Cody gets more swing repetitions in he should get his timing together.  We see it in the cage.  He will miss the first 20, then crush the next 20.

Paxton Bennett did a phenomenal job behind the plate in this game.  Our plans were to put Dakota at catcher later in the game, but Paxton was looking like a league all-star and we did not want to mess with his Karma by changing his position.  He really had his Zen working for him.

Hunter Hewitt got a base hit.  He has been out of baseball for quite a while.  By season's end, he should be right where we need him.

Dakota Ware, Logan Hilton, and Paxton Bennett each reached base on walks.  This is a big drop in walks from last year and our boys need to realize that they cannot expect to go to the plate and get a free ride this year.  They will have to swing the bat or they will be on the bench (from strike-outs) and never get on base to score for the team

Logan Hilton and Jackson Bell did a fine job pitching.  Logan pitched 3 innings, allowing 2 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks with 9 K's.  He three 53 pitches in these 3 innings,

Jackson Bell pitched 1 inning allowing 2 hits, 1 run with 2 K's.  Jackson threw 23 pitches which was excellent for his first inning.  Logan threw 27 in his first inning.

Of the 12 outs the Cubs got in the game, 11 came from strikeouts.  This is awesome from a pitching perspective, but worrisome from a defensive perspective.   We question whether our Cubs will be able to make the play when they have to since they are not getting much fielding action.

With pitchers, this year, we plan to count pitches and allow them to go to 60 pitches.  This could be 2 innings or it could be 3 innings.  In this game Logan threw 53 and Jackson threw 27.

All parents also should know that a protest was filed by Antioch, after the game. The protest was related to a timer issue and Antioch felt the end of the game was called before the timer sounded.  The Cubs were ready to play more baseball and Jackson was on target and had good velocity so we would have welcomed 2 more innings.  We need to get him some work.  The Cubs coaches were not sure what time the game started, so we had no way of knowing when time expired. I have emailed the Rec and offered to continue the game at our next game at Westside.  I have requested that the inning be played after our regular game, since this will allow our boys time to settle in.

Also, the coaches and umpires conversation that occurred after Logan pitched in the second inning surrounded whether Logan used the proper pitching plate distance in the inning. There are 3-4 pitching rubbers on the field.  We have had this confusion in years past and the coaches typically correct the situation on the next pitch or before the pitch is thrown.  In this case, nothing was said until the inning was over.  Cubs coaches, nor the umpires saw the infraction and could neither confirm or deny where Logan was pitching from.  If an accidental infraction occurs and you are aware of the infraction, you should not allow the infraction to occur or continue to occur.  Our Coaches have no idea whether it occurred or not, but since the suggestion came after the inning was completed, we were helpless.  We were not going to deny it occurred, since we did not know.  We could only accept their description of the incident.

Logan has now pitched 9 innings this year vs. Antioch and has struck-out 23, (of a possible 27 outs) allowed only 2 hits and has surrendered only 3 runs, so I do not think the infraction, if it occurred, changed the outcome. Logan struck-out their 7-8-9 hitters during the 2nd inning, who have now batted 0 for 12 (with 2 walks) against the Cubs this year.
