Antioch Dawgs Vs. Westside Cubs

The Cubs went 4-0 with a 7-4 win vs. The Antioch Dawgs.  Drew Guffey got his first win with a strong pitching performance giving up only 3 runs and 3 hits.  Jackson Bell got a save with 2 strong innings giving up only 1 run and 2 hits.

Logan Hilton scored our first run on the first pitch of the game with a home run. Blake Ownbey, Ethan Neal, and Jackson bell  singled in the first.  Five runs were scored in the first and the inning was called due to the five run rule.  Logan Hilton, Drew Guffey, Ethan Hayes, Clay Phillips, and Ethan Neal each scored in the first inning.

The Dawgs fielded well in the second inning and held the cubs scoreless despite a single by Blake Ownbey.

The Cubs managed to score two runs in the third on one single by Clay Phillips.

The Dawgs also held the Cubs scoreless in the 4th despite a single by Logan Hilton.

Drew Guffey pitched three strong innings, allowing only three runs.  He was beginning to loose steam toward the end of the 3rd inning and was replaced by Jackson Bell in the fourth inning.  Jackson pitched two strong innings, allowing only one run and got his first save.

The Cubs are beginning to hit the ball with more authority, which we will need plenty of in our next game against the Varnell Rockhounds.  It looks as if all the time we are spending in the batting cage is beginning to pay off.

Clay Phillips did a superb job of catching in this game.  I'll restate that he is the best first year 9 year old catcher I have ever seen.  He is learning to crouch, with runners on base, and block the ball with his body.  This prevents runners from advancing and prevents runs from scoring.  Catching is a very tiring position and our pitchers need to do a better job of meeting him halfway between the mound and the plate, because as he tires, his throws back to the mound do not have the same accuracy as the game goes on.  If your child is a pitcher, please help us, help them get in the habit of coming in for each throw from the catcher.  Also, a short throw prevents runners from advancing and keeps runners held at third base.
