Drew Guffey is one of our smartest players in terms of intelligence and is learning good baseball fundamentals quickly.  This is Drew's first year with the Cubs, so he probably had more to learn than any other player.  We are very happy to have Drew and we hope he decides to play with the Cubs year after year.

Drew can play any position on the field, but he plays regularly at second base.  In 9 year old ball, the second basemen gets more opportunities to field the ball than any other position, so this is the position where he has settled in.

Drew has made numerous outstanding plays at second base.  The most spectacular play Drew made was probably a line drive catch (six inches off the ground) that ended a play-off game, and gave us the win.  If the catch had not been made, we could have easily lost the game.

Drew, also, is one of our best pitchers. In our third game, our starting pitcher was being roughed up in the first inning. Drew came in to pitch with the bases loaded, one out, with three runs already scored.  Drew did an excellent job of getting us out of a jam, allowing no more runs.  He pitched a couple more innings, kept us close, which allowed us to go ahead in our last at bat.  We eventually won the game, and even though Drew did not get credit for the win, the win could not have been possible without Drew's fine pitching performance.

As a batter, Drew started the year slowly, but he has come on quickly in our last three games with four hits and a home run.  As opposing pitchers improve by getting more pitches closer to the strike zone, Drew will continue to improve, and he will continue to "smash" the ball.

As a base runner, Drew is spectacular.  Recently, he stole home on the throw from the catcher to the pitcher.  His stolen base ended the inning (due to the five-run rule).  The run was very important, because it actually put the opposing team in a position where they could not score enough runs to catch us. His stolen base and scored run ultimately was the game closer.
