Jackson Bell did a superb job pitching against the Bruins, one of the best teams in the county, and we played well enough to win. This was Jackson's best pitching performance of the year. He pitched 5-innings, which I hope we never do again.  Many of the other teams routinely pitch their dominant pitchers five-innings, but this is far too much stress on a 9 (8) year old arm.  We allowed Jackson to continue, simply because his pitch count was very low.  He "went after" hitters and many were retired with 4 or less pitches.  However, in looking at the line-up card below, you can see that he began to tire in the fourth and fifth inning and his pitch count began to go "deeper" (more pitches) with each batter in the final two innings.  The Pleasant Grove game is a primary example of "why" we will begin to limit our pitchers outing to 3 innings.  We sometimes forget these boys are only nine years old (8 Y.O. in Jackson and Logan's case), and pitching places a great deal of stress on their arms at this age.  Both of these boys are "playing up" in terms of league rules.  As long as they continue to pitch well against older boys, they should continue to "play up", because it improves their competitiveness and skill level.  Once they reach 12 year old ball, they may choose to play 12 year old ball for two years.  The Valley Point team has two pitchers (their best) that stayed behind to pitch 9 year old ball.  While they may "dominate" at 9 year old ball, they may not be as dominant when they reach 13 year old ball.

Jackson had 11 strikeouts in the game and scattered 6 hits.

In looking at the score card, it does not look like we got any hits in the game, though I thought Drew Guffey got a hit, but the score card does not indicate, as such.  We had 11 strike outs at bat.  All base runners got on base through bases-on-balls.

We did not play our best game, and while we won, we told the boys they should not be proud of winning in the way they won.  We are one of the  best teams in the county and we must learn to hit the ball, and we must allow opposing pitchers to go deeper in the count against each batter.  We have more (good) pitchers than any team in the county.  We can throw 18 innings each week and throw three very good pitchers.  Most teams have two good pitchers, who can throw only 12 innings per week.  We will always see their best pitchers, but when tournament time rolls around, these other teams will have to find other pitchers to fill the high number of innings.

We won the Pleasant Grove game simply because all teams were forced to play three games during the week, and other teams did not have the pitching that the Cubs have.
